5 TIPS FOR A BETTER EXPERIENCE

Pain becomes part of the real experience of getting a tattoo

It's a well-known fact that tattoos are going to hurt, and for the most part there's no way to eliminate all the pain, but there are some important things you can do to make sure your tattoo session becomes more enjoyable. Take a look at the list below with my tips.

Assist Sober

Although drinking or being under the influence on any drug may seem like an easy way to reduce pain, it will actually make your tattoo much more painful. Alcohol is a blood thinner, which means you will bleed more and the ink won't go in as easily as it should. This, coupled with constant drunken motion, will most likely make the tattoo process take longer, agitate the skin, and may even cause the drawing not to come out as clear or as saturated as it could. Also keep in mind that drugstore painkillers and caffeine will also lead to blood thinning, so you should try to avoid Aspirin, coffee and energy drinks before your tattoo session.

Stay Hydrated

It is highly recommended to drink plenty of water. Start the night before your tattoo session, keep yourself hydrated as much as possible. This will actually allow the skin to accept the ink more easily due to hydration and allow the tattooing process to go faster without thinning the blood.

Eat a Proper Meal

Make sure you go into your tattoo session on a full stomach as it will help build your stamina while you sit through such a painful experience. The day of your tattoo session is a day to "cheat". The more glucose, the better. So if you want that extra bowl of Sugar Cereal to go with your bacon and eggs, go for it! Getting tattooed actually burns a lot of calories, depending on how long the session is, so make sure you fill up on energy to burn.

Get a Good Rest

It takes a great deal of energy to sit through a tattoo session. The more you rest the night before, the longer you can sustain through a painful tattoo session. If you come in exhausted, you probably won't be able to handle a full session of several hours. You're going to want those endorphins and adrenaline to help block out some of the pain, so make sure you get plenty of rest to allow your body to do that which does naturally.

Take Breaks, but Moderated

Getting a large tattoo in a sensitive area like your hands, feet, ribs, or chest can really take you by surprise. Be sure to take breaks throughout the session. Take these breaks for short periods of time to grab a bite to eat and regroup before heading back under the needle. I recommend a small snack like orange juice or a chocolate bar. However, make sure that you are not taking too many breaks or for too long. The tattoo will start to swell a lot more during your breaks, and constant breaks will interrupt a large part of the tattooing process along with your adrenaline buildup going away.
